I don't see any comparison to how bad it was back in the day. Is it because of the additional social service programs?

Thanks Mike for your post. Not sure what you mean about the comparison? Are you asking if we as a society are better now in taking care of people then we were in the Great Depression?

Yeah,
A repub (Hoover then, Bush now) got us into it and Demo (FDR then and Obama now) had to get us out. Though I believe the economy of the early 2000's was not a boom economy like the 1920s. Also, the Great Depression did not happen at the same time there was a war. Some say WWII ended the Depression by creating lower unemployment and greater demand for certain goods. The current war seems not to be having that effect. I wonder what will happen when the troops start coming home in the thousands. |

the closest thing back in the depression to some of the social services we have today would have been the bread lines?
Part of the problem now is people need better educations to get the high paying jobs.IMO |

My dad died a year and a half ago at 91 year old. He was a depression baby. He told me how his mother and father got a divorce in 1930 and was sent to live with his widow grandmother just outside of Anderson. He told about lard sandwiches. How hard his grand mother tried to feed him and his brother. There was hardly any food and no help. He was truly damaged mentally by what he went though. He never let us go hungry. But, two week before he died, he and I were talking about how Bush and the Republicans were driving us into a depression. I said, just like Hoover. Even tho he was very sick and weak he sat straight up and said, that %&@*** S.O.B. he sat on his butt in Washington and let his people starve. Robert, I hope you and your sisters never see a depression and and how bad it really can be. After over 70 years he remember those days just like they were the day before we talked. It a shame to let the Bush's, the Grindrich's, and the Phil Graham's to do it to us again.
