ACS Superintendent Felix Chow, who took office this week, said he didn’t have sufficient background on the data to talk about the results. But he said improving education will be his priority.

ANDERSON — Anderson and Highland high schools’ graduation rates increased in 2009, but the schools still have a long way to go to reach state averages or show parity with surrounding public school systems.

This is funny to me.
If you just read the headline, you would think that ACS had been above state average until this year.
The truth is that AHS brought their rate up 10%!! That is an accomplishment, but there is no credit given other than from Mr. F.

I said this too Tobi. yes, we know we are not at the state average, but dang, can we not celebrate the fact that we went up (10%) and not down?

Working within the ACS system I am amazed that the rate went up instaed of down. Wait until all those kids are dumped into one high school and then check the numbers.

I would like to know why ACS continues suspending and kicking students out of school, when that is exactly what the student wants! I can hardly believe such student parents have the nerve to then rail on school administrators, as their precious child would never do anything wrong.

Id also like to know why the school uniform policy isnt enforced. Bare midrifts, sagging pants, skin tight clothing, etc. seem to be the norm rather than the exception.

Ive seen students simply walk away from school, and wonder why nothing is being done to combat it.

Until local parents begin accepting responsibility for their children and enforcing discipline, ACS doesnt stand a chance in reaching state average test scores.

Okay this is an example of the apathy that the kids have. I am not going to do well on the test so why should I even bother. With the struggling kids I celebrate even the smallest victories with them because that is how you motivate them to do better. What if I said to them, "Don't bother taking the test; you're only going to flunk anyway," Is that motivation? So even with the 10% you say, "Good job. Now let's see if next year we can do better." This is how you improve. You're not going to jump from point A to point B in one year's time.

And what, may I ask, caused this increase/improvement?

There are several programs in place at AHS and HHS to help grab these kids before they drop out, in addition to more awareness of the Alternative school cl***es.

On program for example at AHS is the Power of One. This is where a group of teachers have banded together to mentor a student or two who are on the edge so to speak. Almost p***ing ISTEP or in danger of dropping out.

These are the same parents who vote for and elect the clowns that are running this city.
