Here is an Editoral that suggests longer school year. With some interesting comments at the end.

I for one am not opposed to a long year. However with that said I believe they should not make the day any longer. Also, if they make it longer they should add smaller breaks every so often. Even if it is a Friday & Monday off every 9 weeks.

I am not opposed to exploring the concept of year round school.

I like the year 'round model as long as every school is on the same schedule. Way back when Warren Township in Indy started it, they only had some of their schools on it which made it a nightmare for parents.
